Abstract
A Text on the Socio-Cultural Ground of Tobacco in the 18th Century Ottoman Land: Abū Sahl Numān Efendi’s Epistle Taḥlīl al-Duḫān Abū Sahl Numān Efendi is a significant Ottoman historian of the 18th century. His epistle on tobacco, Taḥlīl al-Duḫān, provoked much discussion in its time and the composition of many epistles for and against it. It’s a text of social history bearing significant traces of its time. When compared to other epistles on religious legitimacy of tobacco, Taḥlīl al-Duḫān has a content that goes beyond them. It contains interesting additional remarks reflecting Numān Efendi’s personal experience about various points such as the reception of tobacco in Anatolia and the kinds of tobacco preferred there. This article offers a textual examination of the aforesaid epistle on tobacco, and an analysis of its content. It also gives information about mān Efendi’s life, the historical journey of tobacco in Europe and the Ottoman land, and the contents of other epistles on tobacco in the Ottoman geography. Included finally in the study is also the transliteration of the text originally composed in Ottoman Turkish
