A thirty-year follow-up of occlusal conditions in woman with single teeth lost

Journal Title: Forum Ortodontyczne - Year 2009, Vol 5, Issue 4

Abstract

Aim of the study: Evaluation the occlusion and dental condition over thirty years in a woman with single teeth lost. Assessment of crown height change in teeth without antagonists. Material and methods: Analysis of diagnostic models of a woman with initially normal occlusion at the age of 25, 35, 45 and 55 years. Visual assessment of incisors protrusion as well as incisal edge and masticatory surface abrasion. Measurements of the clinical crowns height, dental arch length and interdental spaces size including post-extraction gaps. Evaluation of intraexaminer and interexaminer error. Results: Protrusion of upper and lower incisors, excessive abrasion of incisal edges or masticatory surfaces and an increased crown height of all the teeth was noticed. The height of upper teeth crowns increased from 1 to 1,5 mm in the front and from 1,5 to 3 mm in the posterior teeth. Anterior and posterior teeth elongation in mandible was from 0,5 to 1,5 mm and from 0,5 to 1 mm, respectively. The length of the upper dental arch did not change, and that of lower arch incerased by 2 mm. Unaesthetic interdental spaces appeared. The dimension of post-extraction spaces did not change. Statistical analysis showed high (0,99) reproducibility of measurements by two researchers and also high intraexaminer agreement. Conclusions: 1. The height of the crowns of all the teeth increases with age. 2. No difference in elongation of tooth with and without antagonist was found. 3. Progressing with age abrasion of incisor edges and masticator surfaces can affect tooth aesthetics and may contribute to camouflage increase in crowns height. (Orthod.
