Abernethy malformation with multiple aneurysms: incidentally found in an adult woman with Caroli’s disease
Journal Title: Annals of Hepatology - Year 2013, Vol 12, Issue 2
Abstract
Abernethy malformation is a rare anomaly with partial or complete congenital absence of the portal vein and subsequent development of extrahepatic portocaval shunts. We present the case of a 28-year-old woman who was incidentally diagnosed with type II Abernethy malformation and multiple aneurysms during an investigation for nonspecific abdominal pain and fever. The patient had been diagnosed with Caroli’s disease at the age of 10 and liver cirrhosis, portal hypertension a few years before. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first case reported with all such congenital anomalies associated together. Ultrasound, computed tomography, including three-dimensional reconstruction, and magnetic resonanceimaging were performed which revealed a side-to-side shunt between the extrahepatic portal vein and the inferior vena cava, multiple aneurismal cystic dilation of the spleen artery and left renal artery, and extensive intrahepatic bile duct cysitic dilation with calculus formation. Etiology, clinical significance and management strategies with regard to these abnormalities are discussed.

Successful antiviral treatment of chronic hepatitis C in patients with rare comorbidities. Two case-reports
Antiviral therapy in patients suffering from chronic hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection and rare comorbidities cannot be easily started, as it can reduce the likelihood of a good therapeutic response with an increased fre...
Hormonal pretreatment preserves liver regenerative capacity and minimizes inflammation after partial hepatectomy
Introduction. The treatment of brain dead donors with combined hormonal resuscitation protocols, including methylprednisolone (MP) and triiodothyronine (T3), among others, was developed to increase the viability and func...
Glycogenic hepatopathy associated with type 1 diabetes mellitus as a cause of recurrent liver damage
Aminotransferase elevation is a frequent cause of consultation for the Hepatologist, in both the outpatient and inpatient settings, but identifying the origin of these biochemical alterations may be challenging. Here we...
High clinical manifestation rate in an imported outbreak of hepatitis E genotype 1 infection in a German group of travellers returning from India
Background. There are only few reports about travel-associated, imported tropical hepatitis E virus (HEV) genotype 1 infectionswithin Western travellers. We describe the clinical course of a single outbreak of hepatitis...
Notch signal protects non-parenchymal cells from ischemia/reperfusion injury in vitro by repressing ROS
Background. We have previously reported that Notch signaling pathway protects hepatocytes from ischemia/ reperfusion (I/R) injury by repressing reactive oxygen species (ROS) production. However, apart from hepatocytes, n...
