ABO BLOOD GROUPS AND FREQUENCY OF ACQUIRED B-ANTIGEN AMONG SUDANESE COLORECTAL CARCINOMA PATIENTS 2016

Journal Title: European Journal of Biomedical and Pharmaceutical Sciences - Year 2017, Vol 4, Issue 9

Abstract

Background: Colorectal cancer (CRC) is the third-most commonly diagnosed cancer in males and the second-most common in females. Cancer is an increasingly important public health problem in developing countries, including Sudan. The burden of colorectal cancer in Sudan is unknown, mainly because of lack of statistics or under reporting. Colorectal carcinoma is the most common malignancy of the GI tract, unfortunately there are few statistical data regarding colorectal cancer, its geographical, ethnic distribution, & pattern of behavior in Sudan. Conducting ABO blood group among those patients, can help determine the presence of acquired B-antigen that can affect the choice of blood for transfusion moreover no studies were published about acquiring B-antigen in Sudan. Objective: This study aimed to investigate, the prevalence of ABO Blood groups among Sudanese patients with colorectal carcinoma, to determine the association of acquired B-antigen using direct and indirect blood grouping and to correlate the acquired B-antigen with patient`s age, gender and duration of colorectal cancer. Materials and Methods: This is a prospective case-control hospital-based study conducted in RICK in Khartoum, Sudan from November 2016- February 2017. This study included fifty colorectal carcinoma patients as cases, Control group included (50) volunteers. Direct and indirect blood grouping were done to case and control groups frequently of each blood group was determined. Results: mean (+/- SD) of age among cases 43 (+/-9.9) was higher than control group 39 (+/- 11.1), The mean of disease duration was 7 (+/-3) months. Males among case and control groups were (60%), (64%) respectively. The direct and indirect blood grouping of cases revealed the following; A+ve, B+ve, O+ve and AB+ve were; (32%), (16%), (48%), and (4%), respectively. Among control group, A+ve, B+ve, O+ve and AB+ve were; (28%), (22%), (44%) and (6%), respectively. No significant differences between groups (p=.835) and the presence Acquired B-Antigen was not observed among case and control groups. Conclusion: This study concluded that no effects of colorectal cancer on ABO blood groups and no evidence of acquired B-antigen among cases.
