Journal Title: İlahiyat Tetkikleri Dergisi - Year 2018, Vol 2, Issue 50

Abstract

The Maliki Sect emerged in result of Imam Malik (d. 179/795) and his students’ fiqhi (Islamic jurisprudential) activities split into various schools such as Egypt, Kairawan, Madina, Andalus, and Iraq due to either geographical or methodological reasons. Each school has its own tradition, and there are the names and knowledge circles that were influential in the formation and establishment of these traditions. There were many Maliki faqihs (Islamic jurisprudent) who were influential in founding and establishing the Kairawan school. Sahnun ibn Said (d. 240/854), the prominent figure in the whole sect, was actually the representative of the Kairawan school, and al-Mudawwanah al-Kubra penned by him is the main reference resource of that school. The publication activities in the school were mostly based on el-Mudawwanah, and a lot of glosses have been penned about that text. Ebul Hasan al-Lahmi, the subject of article, and his students were influential during the establishment process of this school. The piece entitled Tabsira, in which Lahmi authored his knowledge accumulation, was also a gloss on el-Mudawwanah. In this study, Lahmi’s life, scientific personality, publications, and significance during the foundation process of Maliki school are analyzed.
