Academic Discussion on Social Issues: Aboriginality and Polity in Canada

Abstract

Contemporary Canadian culture is a scene of restless and keen aboriginal activism, operational on several fronts. One is jurisprudential, in which the courts are beginning to deliver subtler and occasionally more advantageous decisions regarding indigenous constitutional and legal-obligation challenges. Others embrace political lobbying and involvement at local and national levels. Concepts that have circulated for years are starting to infiltrate Canadian socio-political discourse, via First Nations discourses of sovereignty and nation. These are considered in this paper, as they interlock with a re-envisioning and reorientation of civic expectation of good governance and democratic citizenship. This speculative essay suggests the possibility of significant change in Canadian discourse on the meanings and fundamental expectations of, the Canadian polity.
