Achilles in the North Pontic region and his connection with Cimmerians, Scythians and Myrmidons. Is it the myth or historic reality?
Journal Title: Eminak - Year 2017, Vol 3, Issue 3
Abstract
Fragments from Homer, Alcaeus and other antique authors, where Achilles is connected with the Cimmerians, Scythians and Myrmidons represent the echo of knowledge of Ancient Greeks about people lived in the North Pontic region before and during the early colonization. Considering this and, besides, archeological and linguistic data as well as information about DNAgenealogy, it is impossible to deny the locals’ impact on the cult formation of Black Sea Achilles. «Barbarians» of the North Pontic region historically, probably, even since a catacomb community, had a cult of an AXI-Snake – Supreme deity and Progenitor; this cult became a syncretic basis for an early cult of Achilles in the North Pontic region at the end of VII – the beginning of the V centuries BC. The place of departure of this cult, perhaps, was the complex of sanctuaries served in lower lands of South Buh river (Berezan, Beykush, Chernomorka II and Viktorovka I).
