Actinomycotic liver abscess: A rare complication of colonic diverticular disease
Journal Title: Annals of Hepatology - Year 2010, Vol 9, Issue 1
Abstract
We present the first case of hepatic actinomycosis requiring both medical and surgical intervention due to liver dissemination from a primary colonic abscess. A 52-year-old white male had a computerised (CT) abdominal scan following an episode of collapse and was found to have peri-colonic and hepatic abscesses. Prior to this episode, he suffered with a two month history of fever, unexplained weight loss, and anaemia suggesting possible malignancy. He was treated with both radiological and surgical drainage of the abscesses, alongside the antibiotic cover and underwent an anterior colonic resection with primary anastomosis. There have been no previous reports of an actinomycotic liver abscess complicating colonic diverticular abscess. A multi- team approach is recommended when disseminated actinomycotic infection is encountered.

Danazol improves thrombocytopenia in HCV patients treated with peginterferon and ribavirin
Background. Thrombocytopenia is a common hematologic disorder observed in patients with chronic hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection. Combined peginterferon (PEG-INF) and ribavirin treatment may exacerbate thrombocytopenia...
Adult human liver contains intermediate-type proteasomes with different enzymatic properties
Background. The 20S proteasome is the proteolytic core of the major intracellular protein degradative system, the ubiquitin-proteasome system. Since little is known about proteasomes of human liver, we have investigated...
Effect of cholecystectomy on bile acid synthesis and circulating levels of fibroblast growth factor 19
Background and rationale for the study. FGF19/15 is a gut-derived hormone presumably governing bile acid (BA) synthesis and gallbladder (GB) refilling. FGF19 mRNA is present in human GB cholangiocytes (hGBECs); however,...
Association of plasma visfatin with hepatic and systemicinflammation in nonalcoholic fatty liver disease
Background. Visfatin is a proinflammatory and insulin-mimetic adipokine contributing to whole body glucose and lipid metabolism. Studies to date are conflicting regarding the relationship between visfatin and non-alcohol...
