Activities Paul Emiliovych Romer in the Kiev physical-mathematical society

Abstract

This article highlights the life and work of the Kyiv outstanding mathematician and educator P.E. Romer, who made a great contribution to the development of mathematics education in Ukraine. Name of Kyiv mathematician Paul Emiliyovych Romer little known to the wider scientific community, but its contribution to the development of mathematics and higher mathematics education in Ukraine deserves more detailed study. Romer was one of the founders of Kyiv Physical-Mathematical Society, which began its work in 1889 and was the heir of the Kyiv Society of Naturalists. Which, in turn, was founded in March 1869 at Kyiv University St. Vladimir. The main objective of the company was considered a scientific work and promotion of knowledge of the natural sciences through public lectures and seminars. The subject of his report at meetings of the Society was varied. It was a report on the history of mathematics, reviews the work of famous scientists (both then and classical) and his own latest scientific developments. At the meetings the Society has repeatedly discussed the issue of teaching mathematics and physics in high school. Throughout his life Romer has been active in community work, helped to increase educational and cultural level of the country. His fruitful work as a member of the Society is still poorly understood. Therefore, the article describes his way of life, scientific, educational and social work.
