ACTIVITY OF SUPRAHYOYDEI MUSCLES ASSOCIATED WITH THE VOICE EMISSION IN TEACHERS WITH SEVERAL-YEARS PRACTISE

Abstract

Introduction. Voice disorders in teachers exposed to the increased emissions tend to the phoniatric controlled rehabilitation and preventive activities. Not only are the muscles of the larynx directly involved in the voice emission. Few patients with symptoms of the voice dysfunction in process of phonation is aware of the significance in the proper use the suprahyoidei muscles to the correct voice emission. Dysfunction of these muscle groups is difficult to determine in the potential clinical trials. In addition to the standard phoniatric tests, non-invasive testing of surface electromyography (sEMG) can determine the degree of changes in the activity of motor units of these muscles. Aim. Determination of the dysfunction degree in the suprahyoidei muscle motor units activity using clinical neurophysiology to condition of increased tension during their relaxation and during maximal contraction that accompanies the process of increased voice emissions. Materials and methods. In comparative studies of voice emission intensity (phonometer, intensity in dB) and suprahyoidei muscles function (sEMG; amplitude in µV) 8 teachers aged from 37 to 49 years (mean of 44 ± 2 years) participated in this project. There were also studied 5 healthy volunteers aged from 21 to 45 years (mean of 28 ± 3 years). In teachers, the observation period of reventive therapy applied in the direction of the appropriate voice emission was lasted 4 weeks. Results. There was no asymmetry in the recordings of surface electromyography (sEMG) parameters from suprahyoidei muscles on the right and left during their contraction in subjects exposed to the increased emissions voice. During the “relaxation” the measurement of sEMG amplitude showed a higher value than normative in teachers. The intensity of phonation and sEMG parameters improved after education. There was found a low variance of the voice intensity and the muscles activity in sEMG, what proves the effectiveness of the therapy lasted about four weeks. Conclusion. sEMG allows for the precise determination of changes in the activity of suprahyoidei muscles motor units in subjects exposed to increased emissions voice.
