Journal Title: Journal of Evolution of Medical and Dental Sciences - Year 2017, Vol 6, Issue 70
Abstract
BACKGROUND Acute Kidney Injury (AKI) is common in critically ill patients admitted to medical ICU and carries significant morbidity and mortality. Early diagnosis and effective treatment of the factors responsible carries better outcome, hence aetiological diagnosis and the presentation of AKI in different diseases gives confidence to the physician to prevent this untoward incidence. MATERIALS AND METHODS A descriptive study was done in the medical ICU of SCB Medical College, Cuttack and consecutive 100 adult patients of AKI were included in the study for the period from Sep 2014 to Sep 2016. RESULTS Among 100 patients of acute kidney injury, the most common aetiology was malaria followed by acute gastroenteritis, vasculotoxic snake bite and leptospirosis in contrary to sepsis which is the commonest cause in literature. CONCLUSION As the diseases are preventable by maintaining proper hygiene and vector control, the burden of acute kidney injury can be reduced.
