Adaptive Capacity and Features of Energy Metabolism in Patients with Diabetes Mellitus Type 2

Abstract

The study of the processes of adaptation and characteristics of energy metabolism in patients with diabetes mellitus (DM) type 2 can serve as a basis for determining their role in the pathogenesis of this disease and contribute to the development of new methods of treatment and prevention. The aim of the study was to determine the level of adaptive capacity and state of the energy metabolism in patients with type 2 diabetes. Materials and Methods. The study involved 27 patients with DM type 2 (mean age — 56.9 years) and disease duration from 1 year to 20 years. Group of 15 apparently healthy volunteers, similar to the main group by age and sex, served as control one. Results. It is found that patients with DM type 2 had a reduction in adaptive abilities, which is based on violation of the energy metabolism of the body. In DM decompensation, the reduction of organism adaptation was more significant. Conclusions. Patients with DM type 2 were characterized by reduced level of adenosine triphosphate, increased level of adenosine diphosphate in the blood, as well as reduced energy potential of the cells. It was found the original hypermetabolism and its paradoxical decrease after induced stress. Baseline hypermetabolism and its paradoxical decrease after induced stress was indicative.
