Adherence to the mediterranean diet according to the place of residence in nursing students of Cáceres

Journal Title: Archives of Nursing Research - Year 2017, Vol 1, Issue 2

Abstract

The Mediterranean diet is considered a healthy eating model because of the multiple benefits it represents. The objective was to determine the influence of the place of residence on the dietary pattern, as well as the adherence to the Mediterranean diet in students from Cáceres. The study was carried out on 171 students of the Nursing degree of the Nursing and Occupational Therapy College of Cáceres. Both the place of residence and the adherence to the Mediterranean diet were established using the Kidmed index. The 75.4% of the students who lived in their family residence consumed a piece of fruit every day, whereas only the 48.2% of university students who share an apartment did it. The daily intake of more than one piece of fruit and fresh or cooked vegetables was similar in both groups. Significant differences were observed in the overall score of the Kidmed index between groups. The students who live in their family residence consume more pieces of fruit and vegetables, resulting in a healthier lifestyle. The level of adherence to the Mediterranean diet was similar in both groups. However, lower overall scores were observed in the group of students sharing an apartment.
