Journal Title: Choregia - Year 2017, Vol 13, Issue 1
Abstract
The study involved 2,624 participants selected in 32 schools. A self-developed questionnaire was used to collect on the administrative variables affecting secondary sports participation. The administrative style of school principals (β = .084, p <.05), availability of qualified (β = .024, p <.05), facility (β = -.291, p <.05), equipment (β = .431, p <.05), level of funding (β = .329, p <.05), scheduling of sports programme (β = .470, p <.05), were good independent predictors of administrative sports participation. The variables accounted for 70% of variation for students and 77% for teachers. For teachers, administrative style of school principals, availability of qualified personnel were not significant. For both students and teachers, the correlation matrix showed that there was significant relationship between the independent variables and sports participation. The findings of the present study demonstrated that sports participation, availability of qualified personnel, administrative style of school principals, availability of equipment, level of funding, scheduling of sports programme and availability of facility are good predictors of secondary sports participation in Kwara state, Nigeria. School management should make sure sports programmes are well planned, and enough qualified personnel are employed for effective planning of physical education sports pragrammes.
