ADVANCES IN GCF BIOMARKERS AS A DIAGNOSTIC AID IN PERIODONTITIS
Journal Title: World Journal of Pharmaceutical Research - Year 2017, Vol 6, Issue 2
Abstract
Periodontitis is an inflammatory disease resulting in the loss of supporting structures of teeth. clinical attachment level, probing depth and radiographic findings form the basis of periodontal diagnosis and treatment plan but these parameters show us only a more retrospective aspect of attachment loss and are unable to either detect or predict periodontal disease activity (PDA) and progression. One of the most predictable diagnostic aid in disease activity is GCF biomarker. Gingival crevicular fluid (GCF) or sulcular fluid is a transudate found in the gingival sulcus and it’s increase is regarded as one of the earliest signs of periodontal inflammation. Various biomarkers like proteins, enzymes, microbial peptides are secreted into GCF which have the potential to predict disease activity, progression and prognosis. This paper highlights the various biomarkers in GCF which aids in assessing periodontal disease.
