ADVANTAGES AND DISADVANTAGES OF SUBTITLING IN AUDIOVISUAL TRANSLATION

Journal Title: The Journal of International Social Research - Year 2015, Vol 8, Issue 37

Abstract

Subtitling is one of the most used methods in translating foreign films shown in movie theaters in Turkey. The other method, dubbing, is generally preferred when the film is for children. Subtitling and dubbing, two main methods of audiovisual translation, have always been compared by the scholars of the field, and at the same time there have been some countries that preferred one method to the other. Although there has been an intense activity of audiovisual translation in Turkey, we cannot say that there has been enough research in this field. This article aims to examine how much subtitling can convey the elements to the target audience within the framework of characteristics of subtitling and to put forward the advantages and disadvantages of it when compared to dubbing.
