Adverse Reactions To Blue Dye Injections During Sentinel Lymph Node Biopsy

Journal Title: Dokuz Eylul Universitesi Tip Fakultesi Dergisi - Year 2017, Vol 31, Issue 2

Abstract

Objective: Sentinel lymph node biopsy for breast cancer surgical treatment has been used as an alternative of axillary dissection in most cases. The aim of our study is to report the rate of adverse reactions during sentinel lymph node biopsies in early stage (T1-T2, N0, M0) breast cancer patients. Methods: We retrospectively reviewed 1374 consecutive SLNBs patients for early stage breast cancer between May 1998 and April 2017 in our clinic. Results: Blue dye was used in SLN biopsies in 315 patients. An allergic reaction occurred in 12 of these patients (0.4%). The patients' stay in the hospital did not change and they received adjuvant treatment without delay. Conclusion: Sentinel lymph node biopsy can be performed using only radioactive colloid injection to protect against the allergic reactions caused by the blue dye. Deep parenchymal injections may be preferred instead of intradermal injections due to toxic effects on the tissue in cases where blue dye should be applied.
