An Epidemiological Study of the Nutritional Status of Selected School Going Adolescent Girls in Bangalore City

Abstract

Adolescence is a unique dynamic period in life, since it is the second and last growth spurt in the life of human beings. Studying the nutritional status of adolescents will help to plan strategies for combating macro and micro deficiencies of future citizens, including future mothers. The study was undertaken to assess the nutritional status of school going adolescent girls. A total of 210 school going adolescent girls were selected in the age group of 13-16 years from government school in Bangalore city. Assessment of nutritional status was carried out by nutritional anthropometry, dietary survey, clinical examination and haemoglobin analysis. Data on dietary intake was collected by using 3 days dietary recall method. Height, weight and mid upper arm circumference were measured. Haemoglobin levels of children were estimated by cyanmethaemoglobin method. Clinical status assessing anemia was also recorded. The mean height and weight of adolescent girls was 149.73cm 42.2kg respectively. The average MUAC measurement of the subjects was found to be 8.35mm. Forty six percent of the subjects had normal BMI (18.5-24.9) and 45 percentage of the subjects had BMI lesser than or equal to 18.5. Even though most of the subjects consumed all food groups on a regular basis, the quality and quantity varied. It was observed that the energy, iron, protein intake amongst the subjects was lower when compared to RDA at significant level of 5%. Thirty eight percent of the subjects were found to be mildly anaemic, followed by moderately anaemic (36%) and 6 per cent were severely anaemic. Prominent symptoms of anemia such as breathlessness, paleness, giddiness were observed amongst most of the subjects. It is concluded that poor anthropometric indices, undernutrition and iron deficiency anemia may be due to lower intake of food and nutrients than recommended
