AN INVESTIGATION OF THE CHEMICAL COMPOSITION OF BOUNDARY LAYERS FORMED IN THE PRESENCE OF SYNTHETIC LUBRICANT

Journal Title: Tribologia - Year 2013, Vol 250, Issue 4

Abstract

This paper presents an investigation of the chemical structure of boundary layers forming on steel surface during friction (ball-on-disc system) lubricated with synthetic oil (PAO-4), containing an ecological (vegetable- -originated) antiwear additive. Sliding surfaces have been examined by X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy (XPS) – Fe2p, C 1s and O1s profiles were recorded. Investigated surfaces were subjected to an ion sputtering (Ar+). The research concludes that some organic compounds are layered in the sidling contact area. The chemical composition of the layers varied along with the sputter depth. In consecutive uncovered layers, iron content increased and the carbon content decreased simultaneously.
