Abstract
One of the directions of the sound broadcasting service development is the improvement of the sound quality in transmitted content, namely, the possibility of application not only the conventional two-channel stereophonic broadcasting, but also the introduction of spatial (immersive) sound technologies. Considering the relevance of such problem, the issue of the possibility of transmitting spatial sound in modern digital broadcasting systems is discussed in the article. Nowadays, several advanced audio content transfer formats have been proposed, and their application will allow to achieve such quality of reproduced sound, that the listener would have an impression as close as possible to the effect of “being present inside a sound event”. Achieving this quality is possible in several ways: by transmitting audio content based on sound channels; by sound object-based transmission; by sound scene-based transmission or by combining these approaches. Overview of these approaches, their advantages and disadvantages are fulfilled within this work. The feasibility of the considered approaches application in the broadcasting service and determining the optimal format of audio content to improve the sound quality while listening the broadcast programs are also considered. Calculations of the required values of the digital audio data transmission rate for some spatial audio transmission formats are carried out. The values obtained were compared with the audio data rate values, that can be provided in contemporary digital broadcasting systems such as DAB+, DRM30, DRM+ and HD Radio. For determining the values of the digital audio data transmission rate, the information from the results of subjective assessment trials, obtained by various research groups were used, a number of international documents and publications were analyzed for this purpose.
