Abstract
Compared to other forms of traffic, road traffic is one of the most common forms of transportation in B&H, and in the world, primarily because of its transportation capabilities. However, despite the benefits, road transport is not a problem to itself, but a problem arises to situations, relationships and activities of human society. The problems are most often expressed in the form of traffic accidents with fatal outcome, in severe or minor injuries participants or in material damage to the vehicle and to the environment. Road safety and the prevention of road accidents are two very complex fields. In order to achieve results in this area it is important to know the causes of accidents, ways of improving safety and ways of their impact on road users. Therefore, the aim of this paper is to show the characteristics of the safety of road traffic in the area of Zenica-Doboj Canton, analyze the causes of accidents, and, on the basis of the analysis and suggest measures that will bring this negative phenomenon closer to a minimum. On this way the road network will meet the relevant European standards.
