Analysis and evaluation of interactivity in virtual learning environments

Journal Title: Trilogía Ciencia Tecnología Sociedad - Year 2019, Vol 11, Issue 20

Abstract

This article delves into the educational interactivity of online learning platforms in order to develop their potential and promote e-learning. Specifically, this work has three objectives: (1) to characterize the most widely used ICTs; (2) to determine if they share common features related to virtual interactivity; and (3) to propose attributes, metrics, and indicators to assess operability in virtual learning environments. To that end, a descriptive study examined the use and applicability of e-learning ICTs in two undergraduate systems engineering programs in Colombia, in Universidad de Medellín and Universidad de Córdoba - Argentina, respectively. Interactivity evaluation and follow-up are analyzed to make key methodological contributions, improve the process, and foster social interaction in virtual learning environments. This topic is relevant not only to this educational process but also to the dissemination of concepts that may contribute to educational quality in virtual environments. Additionally, the authors express their opinions on theoretical elements that could optimize interactivity mediated by ICTs and virtual interactions. In conclusion, according to stakeholders in the educational process, some virtual environments fail to incorporate follow-up tools to foster interactivity.
