Analysis of an effect of radiation of CO2 laser on the enamel

Journal Title: Journal of Stomatology (Czasopismo Stomatologiczne) - Year 2012, Vol 65, Issue 1

Abstract

Introduction. Unintentional change of direction of incidence of CO2 laser radiation may cause damages of an enamel structure during removing mucous membrane proliferations. The aim of the study is the analysis of CO2 laser radiation effect on the structure and the elemental composition of enamel. Material and method. The tests were carried out using molar teeth which were not touched with a decay process. The testing samples of 5mm x 5mm x 2mm were prepared. The tests were carried out in four experimental groups, diversifying the power and frequency of the beam of CO2 laser radiation of 10600 nm length. Surfaces of enamel were subjected to macro and microscope assessment using a scanning electron microscope by IEOL 5400 cooperating with a microanalyser of dispersion of X-radiation by Oxford Instruments LINK ISIS which is used to chemical analysis in micro-areas. Results. The analysis of the structure of the surface and elemental analyses showed differences in particular groups. In fact, within the damage of the surface of enamel, one can distinguish four zones which are concentrically set. These are: the central zone of the crater, alternately, the zone of thermal fusion, the zone of spatter and the zone of carbonization. Conclusion. Due to the type of damages of the structure of enamel and the change of the elemental composition the medical intervention is advisable in the case when the tissue is subjected to the laser radiation of power of 5W, frequency of 5HZ and all higher parameters.
