Analysis of anterior soft tissue thickness using ultrasonogram, body mass index and neck circumference in predicting difficult intubation
Journal Title: Medpulse International Journal of Anesthesiology - Year 2018, Vol 7, Issue 1
Abstract
Background: Difficult endotracheal intubation under general anesthesia can cause intubation delay or failure, which can bring on fatal results. Though there are various methods to predict the airway difficulty, none of them are accurate. Hence in this study we have evaluated to assess the correlation between difficult intubation and soft tissue thickness using ultrasonography and other methods. Aim: The aim of the study is to analyse pretracheal soft tissue using ultrasonogram, body mass index and neck circumference in predicting intubation difficulties. Methods: 200 adults of ASA 1 and 2 between 18 and 70 years were randomly selected and were studied for airway assessment, anterior soft tissue thickness using ultrasound, body mass Index and neck circumference. Results: The variables were statistically analysed using SPSS software version 13. Results were analysed using chi square test and significant correlation was found between increasing neck circumference and difficult intubation. Conclusion: Anterior soft tissue thickness using ultrasound, Body mass index and neck circumference, significantly predicted the difficult intubation.

Tramadol in perioperative shivering in patients undergoing caesrean section under regional anaesthesia
Background: Shivering can be unpleasant and physiologically stressful for the patients. The incidence of post-operative shivering is more in obstetric patients. Many physical and pharmacological interventions are used to...
Prediction of paediatric micro-cuff endotracheal tube size by ultrasonography and its comparison to standard age-based formula
Background and Aims: Over the years conventional formulas based on age, height or weight is being used for endotracheal tube (ETT) selection in paediatrics. Ultrasound is gaining popularity as an easy, simple and non-inv...
Evaluation of efficacy of intravenous magnesium sulphate in general anaesthesia cases for post operative analgesia
Background: Surgical procedures are associated with tissue injury and postoperative pain after surgical interventions. Aim: To evaluate the efficacy of intravenous magnesium sulphate on post operative analgesia following...
A comparative study of Dexmedetomidine and Clonidine as an adjuvants to 0.5% Ropivacaine in upper limb surgeries done under Supraclavicular brachialplexus block
Background: Regional anaesthetic techniques are highly effective in allevating pain during various surgical procedures. The role of peripheral nerve block has expanded from the operating room into the arena of postoperat...
A randomized prospective study of the efficacy of dexamethasone or clonidine as an additive to local anaesthetic for supraclavicular block for upper limb surgeries in a tertiary care hospital
Background: Supraclavicular brachial plexus block is one of the most regular techniques of regional anaesthesia employed for upper limb surgeries. In observation of prolonging the sensory block and duration of block, dif...
