Analysis of environmental DNA in the determination of fertility of agricultural soil in the province of Loja

Journal Title: InGenio Journal - Year 2023, Vol 6, Issue 1

Abstract

Soil fertility can be determined through different processes, one of these is through the analysis of environmental DNA (eDNA) which allows identifying the genetic diversity found in said material, essential in the formation and maintenance of soil productivity. soil, this study is the first of its kind in the province of Loja, it was carried out by selecting 9 areas, in which 26 soil samples were collected, eDNA was measured and the number of microorganisms was estimated from of the amount of eDNA obtained. 35% of total soils (9) showed bacterial counts greater than 6.0 x 108 cells/g-soil, 15% (4) between 2.0 x 108 cells/g-soil (minimum bacterial counts required for the mineralization of organic compounds) and 6.0 x 108 cells/g-soil. However, the remaining 50% (13) had less than 2.0 x 108 cells/g-soil in these soils mineralization with organic nitrogen is extremely low, found in the Saraguro, Paltas and Catamayo cantons. This study is important because it identifies the bacterial counts of different soils and the need to incorporate microorganisms to improve yields, thanks to standardization, the technique can be applied to all the soils of the province and the country.
