ANALYSIS OF SELECTED METHODS OF FORCED FRAGMENTATION OF ARTILLERY SHELLS
Journal Title: Problemy Techniki Uzbrojenia - Year 2016, Vol 138, Issue 2
Abstract
Paper includes selected results of numerical strength calculations for fragmentation liners placed in the shells (crusts) of projectiles and for fragmentation of artillery shells (Table 1) performed by a component strain analysis and a finite element method (FEM) and executed by INVENTOR software of Autodesk company. Some exemplary shapes of fragments originating from the shell made of 45H1 material (random fragmentation) which are a reference basis of the analysis are presented in the paper. In the first part of the paper the oldest way of cutting the fragmentation liner according to diamond pattern is presented. A fragment created by this type of the liner and the most significant drawback of such type of cutting is presented. Next a fragment of the fragmentation liner made with Pearson notch is showed. The effectiveness of this method is strictly dependent on the shell body thickness and notch spacing. The modified fragments are showed and the main advantages of this solution are described. The solution is not optimal according to discussion presented further in the paper where a method of opposite grooving is presented (in chapter 2.3).This analysis was carried out in the frame of R&D project entitled “Research and Development work on ammunition to 120 mm self-propelled mortar RAK”.
