ANALYSIS OF SELECTED PARAMETERS OF BODY POSTURE IN NOVICE DIVERS

Journal Title: Medycyna Sportowa - Year 2014, Vol 30, Issue 2

Abstract

Background. In Poland there are a number of centres focusing on training competitors specializing in diving. The purpose of the study was to perform an analysis of selected parameters of body posture in novice divers. Material and methods. The study group consisted of 42 contestants, aged 8-10, training in the Diving Section at ZKS Stal Rzeszów. The randomly selected controls were 42 children in the same age group who did not exercise regularly. The photogrammetric method was used to measure 16 parameters of body posture in the sagittal and frontal plane. The acquired data allowed for computing: arithmetic mean [x], standard deviation [s] and median [Me] for these parameters. The comparison of body posture parameters in the study group and the controls was performed using the non-parametric Mann-Whitney U test. Results. The study group was found to have significantly higher values of the parameters reflecting: inclination of the thoracolumbar section of the spine (p=0.0000) and length of thoracic kyphosis (p=0.000), and lower values of the length of lumbar lordosis (p=0.0163). In comparison with the controls the study group demonstrated more pronounced curvature of thoracic kyphosis (p=0.0006) and lumbar lordosis (p=0.0235) and different values of the following parameters of body symmetry in frontal plane: KNT (p=0.0041), KLB (p=0,0004) and UL (p=0,173).Conclusions. 1. Diving training impacts the shape of anterior-posterior curvatures of the spine. 2. Individuals who practise diving demonstrate greater symmetry of body posture in the frontal plane than their peers who do not exercise regularly.
