Analysis of the Effectiveness and Impact on the Environment of the Waste Collection and Transportation System

Abstract

Waste collection and transportation is an indispensable part of any waste management system. Designing a municipal waste collection and transportation system is a very complex task, as it requires system optimization in order to reduce costs, increase efficiency, and reduce its negative impact on the environment. The negative effects of an improperly designed and inefficient municipal waste collection and transportation system on the environment can often be greater than the benefits that the system brings through the waste collection. Consequently, it is necessary to constantly monitor and analyse the effectiveness of the waste collection and transport system, and therefore the correct choice of indicators for monitoring. The paper analyses two systems for waste collection and transportation: in the cities of Jagodina and Leskovac, in order to determine their effectiveness and environmental impact. The following indicators were used for this analysis: fuel consumption per mass unit of collected and transported waste, distance travelled per mass unit of collected and transported waste, the amount of collected and transported waste per vehicle day, and the amount of collected and transported waste per employee day, while indicators used for the environmental impact analysis were: emission of CO2 per mass of transported waste and emission of CO2 per distance travelled.
