Analysis of training loads of the Polish national female champion in 400 m hurdle run

Journal Title: Rozprawy Naukowe Akademii Wychowania Fizycznego we Wrocławiu - Year 2007, Vol 25, Issue 1

Abstract

The purpose of the paper is an attempt at finding and determining the value and structure of training loads in the annual training cycle of an international champion class competitor, female champion and multiple national representative. The analysis is focused on comparing the training process in the preparatory and starting period. The material for conducting the analysis was the recorded training work of a 25-year-old competitor M.W. who specialized in 400 m hurdle run – a multiple champion of Poland. Her life record is 55.82 s. The duration of exercises and type of training loads were recorded in three influence regions in the informative area and five intensity zones. The recording range covered all accomplished training exercises over an annual training cycle according to the collection presented by Iskra [3]. The analysis of the data collected has shown that most of the training work was performed by means of general exercises. They dominated over special and oriented exercises whose number was the least one (only during the preparatory period of the first macrocycle the oriented exercises dominated the special ones). Most work was performed in the first intensity zone whereas the work in other zones did not exceed 25% of total time earmarked for training. A comparison of the load structure in the preparatory and starting period shows that in the latter period the percentage of special exercises increased considerably at the expense of general and oriented exercises. Training load structure of this competitor reflects the training ideas of the leading trainer in this event in Poland as his competitors are successful not only in the domestic but also international area. For that reason the data presented may be a guideline (but not a pattern) for designing small and large training cycles for hurdle runners.
