ANATOMICAL VARIATIONS AND THEIR CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE IN POPULATION OF SOUTHWESTERN AND CENTRAL ETHIOPIA

Journal Title: European Journal of Biomedical and Pharmaceutical Sciences - Year 2017, Vol 4, Issue 1

Abstract

The concept and contents of the anatomical variations is the history of the anatomy itself. Anatomical variations represent an embryological and comparative background in medicine and biology in order to understand the morphological aspect of the human body and its Related structures. As a result medical progress needs a more accurate knowledge of the variability of the human morphology to improve diagnostic and therapeutic performance especially on the vascular system. The presented study was aimed to assess the existence of structural variations and their clinical significance in the population of Ethiopia. After ethical approval by the institution involved, 22 formalin fixed unclaimed bodies were dissected for year one undergraduate medical students in accordance with guidelines of Grant’s dissection principle and Cunningham’s manual of practical Anatomy in governmental and private school of medicine in the country. Critical observation, careful dissection and imaging were done in all regions of 22 adult cadavers during dissection. The present study identified the variations in existence and origin of the thyroid ima artery in 4.6% cases, the origin of obturator artery in 2.3% of cases, variation in intercommunication of cephalic and basic vein, and duplication of femoral vein in 2.3% and termination of the obturator vein into the external iliac vein in 4.6% cases. The understanding of possible Anatomical variations, especially the variation in arterial and venous system of the body will aid proper diagnostic interpretation and therapeutic intervention. The arterial variations of the body have been implicated in different clinical situations.
