ANDREY BELY’S SYMPHONIES IN THE CONTEXT OF THE EPOCH

Abstract

An object of the article is the main objective and subjective reasons that served as a basis for the appearance in the works of one of the most outstanding poets of the Silver Age, an unusual for literature genre – symphony. As a result of a comprehensive analysis, the author of the article came to the conclusion that the genre of literary symphony, created by Andrey Bely, arose as a natural result of the development of Western European and Russian culture of the 19th and early 20th centuries. Recognition of music by Andrey Bely and other symbolists as the leading art form was formed in the vein of the world’s perception of the world that had changed dramatically by the end of the 19th century: the fall of the authority of exact knowledge and the powerful wave of intuitionism and irrationalism, a vivid interest to the inner world of human. Symbolists endow music with an ontological status. It is called upon to unite in a whole the world that is breaking up, to order and harmonize the chaos of the surrounding reality, subordinating it to cosmic rhythms. The same status accoding to Andrey Bely’s theory has the sounding word which is possessed the magical power. By the beginning of 20th century favorable conditions developed under the influence of which created a new synthetic genre, combining the possibilities of literature and music – the symphony, which is a natural product of symbolist aesthetics, striving to erase the boundaries between individual art forms. They serve as one of the most vivid examples of the idea of universal unity, the inseparable fusion of various aspects of human life and culture – intuitive and rational knowledge, modernity, history and myth, religion, philosophy and artistic creation that were previously considered as incompatible.
