Anthracycline Cardiotoxicity: Strategies for Prevention and Intervention
Journal Title: Heart Research – Open Journal - Year 2015, Vol 2, Issue 4
Abstract
The cardiotoxic effects of anthracycline compounds, used extensively to treat malignancies such as breast cancer and lymphoma, are well known.1,2 However, despite efforts towards cardioprotective strategies and early detection of anthracycline cardiotoxicity, defined as decline in Left Ventricular Ejection Fraction (LVEF) of ≥10% from baseline or to <50%,3,4 there is currently no consensus on the optimal approach. Current clinical practice guidelines recommend serial LVEF monitoring to identify cardiotoxicity in high-risk patients receiving anthracyclines;

Autonomic Dysfunction, Sympathetic Hyperactivity and the Development of End-Organ Damage in Hypertension: Multiple Benefits of Exercise Training
Autonomic dysfunction is closely related to the development of hypertension, which is characterized by increased sympathetic activity, decreased vagal tonus and baroreflex dysfunction. The hypertension-induced maladaptiv...
Carcinoid Heart Disease: Classical Echocardiographic Features
Carcinoid Heart Disease (CHD) is an important and rare cause of acquired valvular heart disease. Clinical examination supplemented with Echocardiographic evaluation may give the first clue towards an under lying carcinoi...
Beneficial Effects of Pre-Operative Intra Aortic Balloon Pump Support in High Risk Patients Undergoing Coronary Artery Bypass Graft Surgery
Objective: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the efficacy and the cost-benefit of preoperative Intra-aortic Balloon Pump (IABP) treatment on peri- and post-operative cardiac performance, improved hemodynamic stab...
Gangrene of the Left Forearm Following Septicaemia in a Nigerian Child With Tetralogy of Fallot: A Case Report
Tetralogy of Fallot (TOF) carries a higher risk for infective endocarditis (IE) due to associate multiple cardiac lesions. The incidence of IE in operated TOF patients either by corrective or palliative surgery is high (...
