''Anthropology of Asceticism'' of Evagrius of Pontus

Abstract
The article presents the thought of Evagrius of Pontus, one of the first Desert Fathers, who made a successful attempt to systematize all the wealth of the phenomenon of Christian asceticism, understood as a spiritual practice. Evagrius analyzes the ascetic and mystical experience, presents complex and dynamic structure of the internal logic of an anthropological phenomenon. On the basis of the Gospel and the teaching of Apostles, he sees man as the one forming his personal, identical structures in confrontation with certain internal (intellectual and spiritual imperfections of a man, his inclination to passions) and external (the demonic temptation, divine Grace) factors. However, the problems mentioned above cannot be reduced solely to the psychological plane – the content of the doctrine of Evagrius is a mystical experience of the person. Thus, an intellectual and psycho-physical activity of the adept of spiritual practice should lead not only to the knowledge as such, but to achievement of the state of a pure prayer, and then – to the state of divinization (theosis). The strategy to combat the passions, presented by Evargian is a kind of phenomenological analysis of the interdependence of spiritual, mental and psychological spheres of a man that definitely has universal values. Today it may serve even as a model of holistic, systematic psychological analysis.
