Antibacterial activity of Zatariamultiflora Boissextract Against E coli Causing Urinary Tract Infection

Journal Title: International Research Journal of Applied and Basic Sciences - Year 2013, Vol 6, Issue 9

Abstract

ZatariamultifloraBoiss. (ZM) is a thyme-like plant belonging to the Lamiaceae family that grows wild only in Iran, Pakistan and Afghanistan. It has several traditional uses as an antiseptic, carminative, stimulant, diaphoretic, diuretic, anesthetic, anti-spasmodic and analgesic. The present study was carried out to determine the potential antibacterial activity of ZatariamultifloraBoissextract On Urinary Tract Escherichia coliInfection.Plant extract from leaf of ZatariamultifloraBoiss was performed using Rotary.Sampling was carry out from urine culture of hospitalized patients (Boo-Ali Hospital, Zahedan, south-eastern Iran) suffered from urinary tract infections during the years 2010 and 2011.Minimum Inhibitory Concentration (MIC) and Minimum BacterialConcentration (MBC) of plant extract of ZatariamultifloraBoisson bacteria was determined using micro dilution broth methodat six different concentrations. The result show E. coli were resistance to 7 of the agent includingnalidix acid (52.63%), ciprofloxacin(47.36%), gentamicin (31.57%), ceftazidim (36.84%), trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazol (78.94%), itrofurantoin(26.31%) and ampicillin (73.68%). The plant extracts showed inhibitory activity against E. coli with varying magnitudes and these effects were dose dependent manner.
