ANTIDIABETIC EFFECT OF TWO SPECIES OF BARLERIA IN STREPTOZOTOCIN INDUCED TYPE-II DIABETIC RATS

Journal Title: International Research Journal of Pharmacy (IRJP) - Year 2012, Vol 3, Issue 10

Abstract

The present study was undertaken to evaluate the anti-hyperglycemic effect of methanolic extract of leaves of Barleria montana (BM) Dun. and roots of Barleria cristata (BC) (Acanthaceae) in streptozotocin (STZ)-induced diabetes in rats, based on the folkloric reports for its use as an anti-diabetic agent. The extracts exerted significant (p<0.01) anti-hyperglycemic efficacy at all levels tested. After 42 hours of STZ (60mg/kg. b.w. i.p) administration, animals showing plasma sugar level more than 180mg/dl were considered as diabetic rat. Fasting blood glucose (FBG) levels were measured on 0th (after 42 h of STZ), 5th and 12th day. The diabetic rats received BM and BC orally at the doses of 250mg/kg and 500mg/kg b.w. daily for 12 days. The animals receiving 500mg/kg b/w showed a significant reduction in blood glucose levels and improvement in body weight. The present study clearly indicated significant anti-hyperglycemic effect with BC and BM, which lends support for its traditional usage.
