Antifungal properties of selected calcium silicate-based cements

Journal Title: Journal of Stomatology (Czasopismo Stomatologiczne) - Year 2017, Vol 70, Issue 1

Abstract

Introduction. The role of fungi in the failure of root canal treatment has been well documented, pointing to Candida albicans as the most common species. Consequently, the material forming the protective barrier between periodontal tissues and the root canal system should demonstrate sufficient bactericidal and fungicidal activity. Aim of the study. To compare antifungal activity against C. albicans of ProRoot MTA, MTA Plus, Biodentine and MTA+. Material and methods. The cements were prepared in accordance with the manufacturer’s instructions, packed into sections of sterile catheters, and immersed for three hours in sterile water. They were next transferred to 48-well polystyrene plates and incubated at 37°C with 106 cells/ml of C. albicans. Samples were immersed in phosphate-buffered saline (PBS) for 24h or 48h and plated on Sabouraud medium. The number of colonies of C. albicans was determined after 48h. At the same time, the pH of the solution was measured after 3h,24h, and 48h of incubation. Results. Fungicidal activity in decreasing strength was as follows: MTA Plus, ProRoot MTA, Biodentine, and MTA+. MTA Plus had the highest pH of the incubation solution. Conclusions. Considering the antifungal effect, all evaluated biomaterials are recommendable in endodontic treatment.
