Antimicrobial activity of ethanolic extract of commercial green tea against multi drug resistant bacterial strains

Abstract

Green tea extracts are known to exhibit modest antibacterial activity against a number of pathogenic bacteria attributed primarily to the polyphenolic Catechins. Aim of the study was to evaluate antimicrobial activity of Ethanolic extract of Commercial Green tea (Camellia sinensis) against multidrug resistant strains of the pathogenic bacteria- Extended spectrum β lactamase (ESBL) producing Enterobacteriacae, Carbapenem resistant Enterobacteriacae (CRE) and Metallo-β lactamase (MBL) producing Pseudomonas aeruginosa strains. In this cross sectional analytical study stretched over 4months the antibacterial activity of ethanolic extract of commercial green tea (prepared by cold extraction method) against the 23 multidrug resistant test strains was evaluated by Agar well diffusion method and MIC(Minimum inhibitory Concentration) was determined by Agar plate dilution method. It is clearly evident from this study that the crude ethanolic extract of Green tea do exhibit antibacterial activity against the multidrug resistant bacterial strains though this activity may vary with the type of resistance being remarkable against ESBL strains but failing to exhibit a significant activity against MBL.
