Abstract

In recent years there is an upsurge in the areas related to newer developments in prevention of disease especially the role of free radicals and antioxidants Free radicals are unstable chemicals formed in the body during normal metabolism or exposure to environmental toxins such as pollutants in air, food and water. These free radicals further result in oxidative stress. Severe oxidative stress can cause cell damage and death. Free radicals have been implicated in numerous human diseases including atherosclerosis, diabetes mellitus, parkinsonism, immune dysfunction, rheumatoid arthritis as well as various oral diseases like leukoplakia, , oral submucous fibrosis and oral cancer . Oxidative stress is also associated with genotoxicity, and as well premature aging It is a remarkable fact that antioxidants are non-toxic compounds that reduce the incidence of oral cancer. Antioxidant nutrients such as vitamin E, beta -carotene, lycopene and selenium are regularly found to reduce the risk of lung, prostrate, stomach, or body cancers as well as pre-cancerous conditions
