Journal Title: Ginekologia Praktyczna - Year 2006, Vol 89, Issue 2

Abstract

83 women aged between 17 and 38 years old (mean age 28.6) were examined by means of clinical examination and anal endosonography (AES). These group included women following vaginal delivery with symptoms of anal incontinence and women following instrumental delivery or sphincters tears with or without symptoms of incontinence. Full agreement between clinical assessment and AES was found in 78 cases (93%). In the remaining 6 women (7%) disagreement regarding the diagnosis of anal sphincters between AES and clinical examination was found. In 1 case AES gave false positive result, and in another 5 cases, false results were done by clinical assessment. The sesnsitivity of AES was 100%, and its accuracy 98%. The authors concluded that AES was reliable in the diagnosis of anal sphincters defects, enable to differentiate mechanical from neurogenic defects, which further important therapeutic implications.
