APPLICATION OF LOW INTENSITY PULSE ULTRASOUND WAVES IN THE TREATMENT OF FRACTURES, DELAYED UNION AND PSEUDOARTHROSIS
Journal Title: Issues of Rehabilitation, Orthopaedics, Neurophysiology and Sport Promotion-IRONS - Year 2015, Vol 13, Issue 13
Abstract
Introduction Low intensity pulse ultrasound (LIPUS) therapy is a percutaneous stimulation of bone union. In clinical studies on ani- mal models and multi-center, prospec- tive, double-blind studies with placebo it was demonstrated, that LIPUS affects ac- celeration of the fractures healing and pro- duces the osteoinduction effect. Simplicity of application and the range of indications allow the stimulation of reconstruction al- most every fracture type in the bone. Aim and method The aim of this study was to review reports on the effect of ultrasound on the healing of fractures and treatment of pseudoar- throsis that have been published in the specialistic medical literature included in the PubMed database, after entering the key words “LIPUS” and “low intensity ul- trasound.” Results In clinical studies with the level of evi- dence I, there was proved shortening the time necessary to obtain the three-layers union of fresh fractures and healing of pseudoarthroses after the application of ultrasonic stimulation. It was also shown that LIPUS influences the healing process in all phases of union formation. Conclusion The results allow to evaluate the induction of ultrasound as a safe, effective, non-inva- sive and easily accessible method to pro- mote healing of bone in the majority of clinical cases.
