APPLICATION OF SEMICONDUCTOR GAS SENSORS ARRAY FOR CONTINUOUS MONITORING OF SEWAGE TREATMENT PROCESS REGULARITY

Abstract

Devices with a array composed of various gas sensors, also called electronic noses, allow to determine the unique pattern of signals (gas fingerprint) for the analyzed gas samples. When the strict measurement conditions are obeyed, signals can be correlated with several physico-chemical parameters of the gas samples, as well as liquids with a headspace phase. The array composed of eight MOS type resistive semiconductor gas sensors was used to control wastewater treatment process regularity, conducted in semi-automated laboratory SBR reactor. Gaseous phase was sampled above the wastewater surface in closed reactor chamber and afterward dehumidified using a nafion tube dryer. For the analysis of multidimensional data there were used artificial neural networks (ANN) which evaluated the status of the process. The research results revealed high usefulness of MOS sensors and SSN for continuous monitoring of wastewater treatment process regularity. In case of the devices connected to world wide web, there is a possibility of remote viewing of the process status.
