Application of sludge and environmental safety

Abstract
In view of the upcoming ban on sending sludge to landfills, the question of its environmentally safe application become more im- portnant. Until recently, it was believed that the biggest problem of chemical contaminants present in the sludge is posed by trace ele- ments (mainly heavy metals) and persistent organic pollutants (PHA, PCB). However, the latest research indicates a number of new ha- zards. They include mainly PPCPs, i.e. Pharmaceuticals (antibiotics, anti-inflammatory and analgesic agents), Personal Care Products (e.g. triclosan) and nanoparticles (e.g. Ag, Fe, Cu, TiO2).
