APPLICATIONS OF FLOW CYTOMETRY IN MICROBIOLOGY VETERINARY SCIENCE AND AGRICULTURE
Journal Title: Revista MVZ Cordoba - Year 2007, Vol 12, Issue 2
Abstract
Flow cytometry, an automated, multiparametric and quantitative method, analyzes the scattering and fluorescence signals produced as series of single cell pass through a laser beam. The potential of the new methods of analysis in the microbiology laboratory has grown enormously in the past few years and flow cytometry has consolidated itself as a fast, simple, sensitive, economic and automated analysis tool for the increasing development needs of Colombia. Accordingly, flow cytometry can be used to obtain data on the physiology, morphology, genetics and diversity of microorganisms, animals and plants. The diverse flow cytometric applications in food and, environmental microbiology, veterinary medicine and agriculture can complement or replace existing techniques in order to adapt research laboratories to the growing necessities of the global science and economy markets.
