Applying of Case Study in Crowdsourcing Research
Journal Title: Theory and Practice of Social Systems Management - Year 2017, Vol 3, Issue 2
Abstract
Crowdsourcing means separation of functions, once performed by employees and outsourcing them, in the form of an open on-line call, to an undefined community – the crowd. Crowdsourcing is a relatively new term, nonetheless it has been raising interest with researchers. Although crowdsourcing is developing as a subject of scientific investigation, one may note in the subject literature many ambiguities, which result from a proliferation of various research approaches and perspectives. Research on this notion is conducted using various scientific methods, which capture results of a qualitative or quantitative nature. Nonetheless, scientific methods lean towards case studies. The aim of the article is to present the possibilities, along with directions in making use of the case study method in research on crowdsourcing. In addition, the article presents a review of the existing research on crowdsourcing, which makes use of case studies. Recommendations in the context of possibilities for use in studies were formulated. The goal of research here allowed us to identify the essence of case studies, the procedure and the advantages of this methodology in the scope of research on crowdsourcing. The possibilities of applying this methodology, especially in the context of theory testing were indicated. It is assumed that the advantage of case studies over other methods comes from a willingness to deeply examine, in order to better understand the reality and early stages of the science behind crowdsourcing. Such distinctions may constitute a recommendation as to methodology applied by future researchers.
