Archaeological research at Kuchumovo hillfort (Isker) in 2014

Journal Title: Поволжская Археология - Year 2015, Vol 4, Issue 14

Abstract

The author offers findings of research conducted at Isker hillfort (Tyumen Oblast) in 2014. Isker used to be the capital town of Siberia Khanate. The archaeologists aimed to seek a burial ground, supposedly located at the western, field side of the hillfort. Accounts about some finds of remaining burials were brought in archaeological reports and publications in late 19th – early 20th centuries. The excavation trench of 2014 yielded a late medieval inhumation, with the elements of its funerary rite typical for the Siberian Tatars in 15th – 16th centuries. Thus, the trench confirmed existence of a town cemetery in that place, dated by the time of Siberia Khanate. Moreover, the bank of the Irtysh River yielded a representative collection of finds from a disturbed cultural layer, the artifacts belonging to the following three chronological periods: 12th –14th, 15th –16th centuries, and 1582–1585.
