Journal Title: Поволжская Археология - Year 2015, Vol 3, Issue 13

Abstract

Preliminary studies of silver coinage material from the Semenovskoe I unfortified settlement site situated at the confluence of the Volga and Kama rivers in the territory of Volga Bulgaria are discussed in the article. Chemical composition and structure of the transversal fracture of six fragments of 10th-century coins were investigated. The samples were analyzed by applying optical and electronic microscopy. The results allowed revealing a particular coin manufacturing technology of depending on the ruler’s name and the time of minting. Analysis of the coins fractures proved the correctness of the research methodology, which allows avoiding distortions that arise from sample preparation. The incorrect character of the data obtained from studies of the surface layer or thin cross sections has been proved. The authors plan to investigate these findings by other analytical techniques in order to work out an optimal research complex for the purpose of its application in the study of a wide range of archaeological numismatic material.
