ARTILLERY FIRING SYSTEMS – PRESENT STATE AND DEVELOPMENT POSSIBILITIES

Journal Title: Scientific Journal of the Military University of Land Forces - Year 2009, Vol 151, Issue 1

Abstract

All the artillery branches are subject to constant development. A number of new technologies have emerged over the last few years. The state-of-the-art firing systems are now equipped with GPS systems, ballistic computers and automatic command systems. These solutions have shortened the time required to open fire. What is more, the idea of the network-centric battlefield ensures a rapid transfer of information about friendly and enemy forces. In many armies artillery reconnaissance is supported by UAVs. Some modern systems, such as PzH-2000, AS-90 or CAESAR, have been developed. Older types like MLRS have been modernized. In addition, fire accuracy has been significantly improved owing to the introduction of modern types of munition: laser-guided, infra-red and GPS. Nowadays many revolutionary artillery technologies are being developed.
