ASSERTIVE VERBS AS A MEANS OF MARKING EPISTEMIC STANCE OF THE UTTERANCE IN ENGLISH

Abstract
The article explores the salient features of assertive verbs as a means of expressing epistemic modal meanings in English. It is suggested to provide a framework for the analysis of assertives in terms of structural characteristics and epistemic modal potential. The research focus is on the peculiarities of parenthetical and non-parenthetical use of assertive verbs and its impact on the modal colouring of the utterance.
