Assessing the dependence level of patients in an orthopedic ward of a school hospital

Abstract
The quality and safety of nursing care are associated with care process and the human resources management. This research aimed to characterize in patients at a orthopedic ward of a school hospital, according to their dependence level on nursing care and nurses’ team dimensioning. This was a cross-sectional, descriptive study which data were obtained through nursing records. The calculus for nursing dimensioning was performed and subsequently compared with the current staff of the hospital section. The results showed that 51.1% of patients need semi-intensive care, 42.6% intermediate care, and 6.3% minimum care. The nurses’ staff is considered lower than that recommended for the unit. Therefore, it is necessary to increase the number of nurses to care in patients in that institution, in accordance to the level of dependence observed.
