Assessment of Air Quality and Meteorology in Tripoli and Zliten Cities, NW Libya

Journal Title: Libyan Journal of Engineering Science and Technology - Year 2024, Vol 4, Issue 1

Abstract

The objective of this research is to determine the pollution level (AQI, PM2.5, and PM10) and its effect on human health and to examine the meteorology parameters with air quality index (AQI) during the July to December period of 2023. The data on AQI, PM2.5, PM10, and meteorological parameters were taken from the AirVisual Outdoor Monitor. The air pollutant level of health concern (US EPA, 2014) and statistical analyses of the Spearman-Rank correlation coefficient were used. The result showed AQI, PM2.5, and PM10 recorded the highest levels in the November period and were classified as unhealthy for sensitive groups. The level of pollution in Zliten city is higher than in Tripoli city due to differences in emission sources and area topography. The source of pollution in Tripoli city fluctuated from natural to anthropogenic sources during the periods of the study, and Zliten city was impacted by a natural pollution source. The meteorological parameters such as temperature, humidity, and pressure had a negative correlation with AQI, which reflected that there is no relationship between meteorology and AQI.
